📚 What Is CPD?
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) refers to the process of tracking and documenting the skills, knowledge, and experience that professionals gain both formally and informally beyond initial training. It’s a proactive and conscious form of learning that helps individuals maintain and enhance their professional competence.
🛠️ How CPD Works
CPD can take many forms, including:
- Attending workshops, seminars, or conferences
- Completing online courses or webinars
- Participating in peer reviews or mentoring
- Reading relevant articles or research
- Reflective learning and self-directed study
Professionals are encouraged—or sometimes required by their regulatory bodies—to engage in CPD regularly. The goal is to ensure ongoing competence and to adapt to changes in the industry or profession.
🧮 CPD Points, Credits, and Hours Explained
The CPD system uses a few interchangeable terms to quantify learning:
| Term | Meaning | Conversion |
|---|---|---|
| CPD Hours | Actual time spent on a learning activity | 1 hour = 1 CPD point/credit |
| CPD Points | Often synonymous with CPD hours; used to track progress | 1 point = 1 hour of CPD |
| CPD Credits | Another interchangeable term, especially used in formal CPD frameworks | 1 credit = 1 hour of CPD |
- 1 CPD hour = 1 CPD point = 1 CPD credit in most UK systems2.
- Activities must be structured, purposeful, and relevant to count.
- Some accrediting bodies may assign more than 1 point per hour for high-impact activities, but this is less common.
🗂️ Recording CPD
Professionals typically maintain a CPD portfolio, which may include:
- A log of completed activities
- Certificates of attendance or completion
- Reflections on what was learned
- Evidence of how the learning was applied
This portfolio is often reviewed during appraisals, audits, or revalidation processes—especially in regulated professions like healthcare, teaching, and law.

Requirements vary by profession and accrediting body. For example:
- Teachers may need around 30–50 CPD hours annually
- Healthcare professionals under the HCPC or GMC may have specific revalidation cycles
- Corporate professionals may follow internal CPD frameworks
